2009 APM Board ElectionAPM’s constitution requires one third of board members to retire by rotation each year, which currently equates to four vacancies. At the AGM in 2009 the four existing board members who are obliged to retire are Rod Baker, Philippa Foster Back, John Glanville and Geoff Lowe. All four are eligible for re-election should they choose to stand again, although Philippa and John have indicated that they will not do so. The opportunity exists for any member to stand for election for the vacancies which arise (please note that board membership is only open to MAPM or FAPM). Board membership is a responsible, interesting, diverse and enjoyable role central to the governance and future directions of APM as the leading project and programme management body in the UK and the largest in Europe. With the drive towards chartered status entering its final phase those board members elected in 2009 will be involved in a new chapter in the history of the association, with responsibility for shaping the future direction of both the association and the profession, and harvesting the benefits which chartered status has to offer. Board members are both directors of the company and charity trustees, with legal responsibilities. They are voluntary positions and candidates should be prepared to commit sufficient time for attendance at board and board committee meetings, as well as at other APM functions and events. There are six board meetings each year, usually held in Princes Risborough, and these may be combined with other meetings, necessitating up to two days commitment on each occasion depending on the travel required. All board members are expected to undertake committee roles and these additional meetings may be held in London or Princes Risborough or use virtual meeting technology. Together with associated preparatory work, current board members estimate that APM duties occupy between 25 and 40 days a year. The ability to think and act strategically is a prerequisite for board membership. Ideally candidates will be able to demonstrate previous effective experience of working at board level. The board is also keen to reflect the diverse nature of the membership, so nominations are welcome from members of both sexes, of all ages and ethnic groups. A nomination form, which requires support from two other members, can be downloaded below and the closing date for nominations is 24th September 2009. A ballot of the eligible membership will be conducted during October/November and the successful candidates will take office from the AGM on 24th November 2009. The first meeting of the new board is scheduled for 25th November. Guidance on the responsibilities and duties of charity trustees and company directors can be found below, or for further information please contact the secretary, John Salisbury, on 01844 271644. 2009 APM Board Nomination Form Directors and Secretaries Guide (GBA1)
