Applying for Fellowship
When will I hear the results of the membership panel meeting? Panel meetings take place every four to six weeks and the grading results from these meetings are sent out within a week of the Panel’s decision being available. We will keep you informed of the progress of your application and the meeting at which your application will be assessed.
I have held a senior position in project and programme management for over 10 years, am I eligible for fellowship of APM? Your senior position is important, but it is just one of the criteria for fellowship, alongside evidence of a contribution to the wider profession, substantial achievement in professional practice and commitment to your own continuing professional development. When submitting your portfolio it is important to emphasise the outcomes of your experience and achievements in these terms.
What if my experience has mainly been limited to working for one organisation? You should demonstrate how the work you have done impacts not just on the project management capabilities of your own organisation, but on other stakeholder groups such as customers, suppliers and the project management community as a whole.
I find it hard to find time for my own continuing professional development, what do you advise? With a little ingenuity you should be able to find ways to demonstrate how you are increasing your personal understanding and ongoing project management awareness. This is not always about “training” or courses and there are many forms in which an individual can be deemed to have undergone some element of CPD. Check out our CPD booklet for some ideas and consider in detail the guidance on ‘evidence of achievements’ in the fellowship guidance notes.
I have been a full member for less than five years, can I apply for Fellowship? Yes you can, as long as you meet the criteria for admission and can provide evidence of significant professional achievement and at least 10 years of professional practice and development.
What disciplines are acceptable as evidence of professional practice? Project management is a pan-sector discipline and as such we welcome applications from those with an appropriate level of professional experience and commitment to the wider development of the profession of project management, whatever the discipline. You should be able to demonstrate a personal commitment to professionalism and your own professional development throughout your career.
What can I do to the structure of my portfolio to make its format acceptable? Please ensure you include all elements identified in the fellowship information pack and application form under ‘preparing your portfolio’. Your portfolio must be in English and correctly indexed.
Who are the members of APM’s Membership Panel? The panel is drawn from the membership of APM and comprises senior, practising project managers and others with in-depth experience of the profession. If you would like to join the panel or are interested in other consultative groups in APM, please email your details to info@apm.org.uk
Do you accept video or audio recordings as evidence? Yes we do, please check with the membership department on what format is acceptable and please ensure you send copies rather than originals.
How many times can I apply for Fellowship? There is no limit to the number of times you can apply, but you can significantly improve your chances of success by following the guidance notes on assembling your portfolio and checking with our membership department if you have any queries.
What if I don’t accept the terms on which my application was unsuccessful? An appeals procedure is in place and you will receive a copy when we write to you explaining why your application was unsuccessful
Can I submit an electronic portfolio? Yes you can, but please check with our membership department on the most appropriate format
Are there any age restrictions on applying for Fellowship? There are no age restrictions, but the level of seniority and professional achievements and experience that is required will define the appropriate point in your career when you should apply for Fellowship.
How are Honorary Fellows appointed? The award of the title of Honorary Fellow is in the gift of the Association and is controlled by the Honours Committee. Full details are included in the Rules and Regulations, Volume 2, Appendix 10.5. Click here to find out more about APM’s rules and regulations.
Where can I find a current copy of APM’s Code of Conduct? Click here for a copy of APM’s Code of Conduct. All members, whatever their status, must agree to abide by the Code of Conduct.
