Frequently asked questions

What is a CSCS card?
A CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card is a plastic card, the size of a credit card, with an individual’s name, photo and CSCS reference number on it.
The Construction Skills Certification Scheme is a register of competent workers in the construction industry. The main aims of the scheme are to improve standards of workmanship and reduce accidents in the construction industry.
The card shows the individual’s occupation and that they have undergone health and safety awareness training and testing. It is valid for five years and is renewable on condition that you retake the Health and Safety test and you are still a member of APM.

Why would I want one?
Possession of an appropriate CSCS card is increasingly being required for access to construction sites in the UK.

How do I get one?
In the past, you would have needed to take the appropriate construction related S/NVQ, but now eligible members of APM can apply via the professional institution route.

Am I eligible?
You should:

  • be a full member of the APM
  • hold the PQ or CPM qualification
  • work in construction or a related sector such as civil engineering or real estate
  • have passed the Manager Health and Safety test – see www.cscs.uk.com for details.

How much will it cost?
The Health & Safety test currently costs £17.50
The CSCS card costs £24.47
APM is required to sign off your application to confirm you meet the eligibility criteria; for this we charge a non-refundable £45 administration fee
