Community project of the year
Langdon Park Station, Docklands Light Railway Ltd The creation of the station was led by DLR and involved numerous other parties, but also relied on heavy involvement from the community – right from the planning stage through to station opening to ensure its success. This success can be seen in the large volumes of passengers using the new station – over 7,000 journeys each weekday, 30 per cent above the projected levels of demand. DLR’s planning methods used to obtain funding, stakeholder and community involvement have been widely acclaimed within Transport for London (TfL) and beyond. Langdon Park is the first DLR station fully funded by external sources delivered on the back of its significant regeneration and social inclusion benefits. It will also act as a key driver in capacity building and assist the transformation of an area that has suffered from years of under-investment and lack of opportunity. On collecting the award Nick O’Donnell, DLR, said: “I worked on the project for seven years until it finally got built. It involved a lot of hard work and a lot of effort. I got a rejection at the start so to get it off the ground and to see it happen has made us very proud. He also paid tribute to the community spirit that contributed to its success. It was a major community effort to build the project and make it happen and it is really great to share it with our colleagues in DLR who made it happen as well. In the end there were only about five or six people involved in the project, it was more about the community, the local school and the residents who really got involved. They have been integral in all the design work, all the delivery, all the construction and post work as well."
