Profile
Governance Specific Interest Group
Overview
Since October 2003 this group has sought to answer the questions:
• How does an organization, particularly its directors, assure the effectiveness and efficiency of their portfolio direction, sponsorship and programme and project management? • How do they ensure proper coherent disclosure and reporting of these systems and of their performance?
We base our investigation on published governance requirements, on recognised standards and on the experience and knowledge of our members. As our guidance is widely used so we are making a difference to the quality of project management oversight and performance.
The guide Directing Change: A Guide to Governance of Project Management (130kb) was launched in September 2004. It is available in hard copy from APM and may be downloaded from the link above. It has proved highly popular with over 60,000 copies currently in circulation.
Co-Directing Change: A Guide to the Governance of Multi-owned projects, is the sister guide to the successful APM publication, Directing Change. This guide follows a structured approach that enables directors to question how well shared projects are governed and to decide where and at what level action is needed. It is founded upon twelve principles that should apply to any multi-owned project in either the public or private sectors, or indeed in Public-Private Partnerships. The guide is available for members to download from the members area of this website.
Sponsoring Change: A guide to the Governance Aspects of Project Sponsorship was launched in October 2009. This guide explains why every project needs a sponsor, what attributes are required of sponsors and the organisations that appoint them and what a sponsor does. It applies across sectors, to all types of organisations and contains useful checklists. We are building further on our successes and have some exciting initiatives to which you are welcome to contribute, either online or at our meetings held on the third Thursday of every month, usually in London.
