Chartered & BEYOND

"At its most fundamental, project management is about people getting things done"
Dr. Martin Barnes CBE, APM President,

Read APM CEO Andrew Bragg's interview on Chartered Status in Project magazine, March 2010.

Launched in 2007, our campaign to achieve chartered status for the profession of project management has drawn unparalleled support from 50 organisations across the public and private sectors – more than any other application before or since. It has created a huge momentum for raising professionalism within project management.

The importance of increased professionalism cannot be underestimated – project and programme management are vital contributors to the UK’s economic interests. The National Audit Office recently reported that expenditure on the 43 most complex major projects in government alone is over £200 billion. APM is leading the way in helping organisations and individuals to enhance their professionalism through the development and promotion of the 5 Dimensions of Professionalism.

To support the successful growth of the profession of project and programme management, our priorities are therefore:

  • To achieve chartered status for the profession in as short a timescale as possible;
  • To launch the pilot of the new APM project professional standard in April 2010;
  • To sustain the momentum for increasing professionalism in project management in the belief that all stakeholders will benefit from achievement of a Royal Charter for the sector.
