Communications Survey
The People SIG – Communications Survey Spring 2009
The People SIG conference of July 2008, served as the catalyst for this communications survey. During the conference, it was established that there was little known about methods, processes and outcomes of existing communication in the project environment.
The People SIG sponsored Tim Lyons, a SIG member (and professional coach and project manager), to lead and conduct this initiative. Tim, together with People SIG member contributions, developed a broad based on-line questionnaire to explore the current state of communications within organisations. In this context we define communication as ‘a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behaviour’. Within this section you have access to three PDF documents:
• A summary of the communications survey output • A detailed document providing the results of the survey and its immediate indicators and contributors • A slide set for use in presenting the results of the survey All of these documents are subject to APM Copyright and no part of this publication may be stored in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form, or by any means without the written permission of the Association for Project Management. Within the United Kingdom, exceptions are allowed in respect of fair dealings for the purposes of research or private study, or criticism or review as permitted under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act, 1988 providing the source is acknowledged clearly and near to the cited text, including the name of the association, the title of the publication and the place and date of the publication.
Readers are responsible for the correct application of the information in these publications and its conformity with all relevant legal and commercial obligations.

One of the key outcomes from this communications survey is the recognition that it provides a basis for further investigation and expansion of some of the themes raised.
