Project of the year 2008
Project of the Year was awarded to Rolls-Royce for its work on the Defence Aerospace Operations (DAO) facility in Bristol. The 25,000 m2 building was used to consolidate all key aero-engine manufacturing facilities on one site and allow 65 acres of land to be vacated and sold for redevelopment. The team was commended for not only delivering a first-class construction project but also integrating streamlined production processes and new ways of working within the building. DAO said it was important to have a modern work environment for its employees, especially as defence aerospace sales accounted for 21 per cent of group sales. The success of the project is best summed up by helicopter worker Jeff Pearce: “The new facility is nice and bright. I didn’t notice how dull and dark it was until we moved over to the new facility. The new layout works!” The redevelopment also represents a substantial investment in local manufacturing and one that will underpin future high technology jobs within the region. Programme manager and team spokesperson, Bill Cullen said: “It’s a huge honour for me and the rest of the team. It took four and a half years to deliver and involved close co-operation with the workforce to make the changes within the factory. That’s what was most powerful and one of the most significant things we did.”
