Portfolio management

Portfolio management solves problems. But setting up the business systems, change management and sustained action necessary to deliver it are significant challenges facing our organisations today. While engagement with programme and project management professionals may suffice when pursuing benefits in those specific disciplines, the strategic content and governance regimes required mean that portfolio management can only be fully exploited through leadership from the most senior levels. The APM Portfolio Management SIG would like to spread the portfolio message far and wide. Through the APM...

At a recent SIG event a delegate asked the above question, which caused a few head itching moments for us committee members. The question above is very different from the value and benefit of portfolio management, which includes the practical ways in which we go about making portfolios happen efficiently and effectively, from identification to delivery. The dictionary says that ‘value’ can be defined as ‘worth’. So for an actively managed portfolio, implemented at any level, should worth always be articulated in the common business language of financial value? Surely, if the worth, whatever it...

This was the theme for a half-day conference hosted by the Portfolio Management SIG, held in London on Tuesday 2nd October. A packed house of around 60 delegates from a wide range of public and private sector organisations heard a variety of speakers talk about their own practical portfolio management experiences and insights. (See list of presentations below).Steve Jenner, co-author of, and Chief Examiner for, the OGC’s ‘Management of Portfolios’ and author of a new APMG guide ‘Managing Benefits’ published in September 2012, set the scene by posing some challenges on how to make...

Portfolio Management is growing in importance as organisations look to gain greater value from their overall investment in change and projects, and ensure that the portfolio does deliver the organisation’s strategic objectives. The APM 2020 vision that “every project succeeds” has sparked much discussion about how success is measured – at a time when project success is still not plentiful. The Reading Chapter of the Thames Valley Branch co-hosted this event with the Portfolio Management (PfM) SIG.Killing off a project is often viewed as “failure” whereas, in contrast, the Portfolio...

The Management of Portfolios (MoP) guidance has been in the public domain for quite a while now, and before that, it was available in draft form. However, I am not going to pick holes in it as its a great piece of work that provides an excellent framework with which to organise a change agenda, and a definitive source of terms and role definitions -  fantastic! There are some bits not quite in line with P3O®, but I’m not going to pick holes in that either! However , based on my experience across the board, the three areas which I would suggest for extension in the next version are:1....

Given that the APM PfM SIG has 575 subscribing members, we decided it was a good time to gather some views on your experiences of portfolio management. Your views will be used to help shape a number of PfM SIG activities being planned, including:• a ’stock’ presentation on PfM which could be drawn (and built) on for use by all PfM SIG speakers, including case studies; • strategically chosen themes for future blogs; • subjects for debate at SIG or Branch meetings; and • topics for further research, using postgraduate students with an interest in the topic. To do this, we are asking you to...

Should risk management and portfolio management be partners in value management? In my experience the two disciplines are undertaken by different people and in different forums. Fortunately there was a chance to consider how the two disciplines overlap, at a recent joint IRM/APM session on Risk Appetite. On the 11th July in Manchester, the Institute of Risk Management  and the APM Risk Management SIG discussed a variety of risk appetite topics with the subject of “value” at the core of the discussion, and then listened kindly while I waxed lyrical about portfolio management (PfM...
