Portfolio Management experiences

Our department is currently going through a major restructuring exercise which we see as a rare opportunity to embed some formal Portfolio Management practice. As part of our work, we are keen to investigate the experiences of others, both good and bad and, hopefully, find areas of common ground to provide some mutual benefits. We are mainly interested in the involvement of central and local government in PfM, but very happy to hear from the private  sector as well.

Is there anyone out there who has a story to tell?

Hi Alastair,

I guess my first comment is that you should assess the politics and culture of your organisation and of your key project sponsors before you decide where you are wanting to go with this.

Yes following the right practice is key to make it work, but to move your organisation to a situation with the portfolio is really relevant and critical will require the key players to agree that they will list all their projects and if any don't make the proritisation criteria then they will drop them. That's much more about change managment and potential culture change than about a formal Portfolio Management practice, and will take longer to change than implementing the practice.

I am a committee member of the APM Portfolio Management SIG - we recently met at the Governance SIG Benchmarking event.

If you send me your details I will forward some contacts for you in both private and public sector organisations who have / are implementing PfM practices - msamphire@3pmxl.com

Also you would be most welcome to attend one of our PfM SIG meetings to explore more with colleagues.

Regards

Martin
