Is the APM suitable for Project Planners?
Posted by Ian Blackwell on 8 May, 2012 - 21:20
Apologies if this is the wrong forum to pose this question but I've been mulling over joining the APM for a while but I'm not a PM as such. I've spent the last 18 years as a Project Planner/Project Planning Manager (the last 12 years freelance) rather than a Project Manager, my roles have included being Lead Planner for BT on the 2012 games, providing planning and risk management for the deployment of a fleet of 25 LNG tankers and Programme Planning Co-Ordinator for the build of a Satellite (I've had some mundane contracts as well!). I've looked at the Membership page and I'm still a little unclear as to whether I'd qualify. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi Ian
In short, from the information you've supplied above, I think that you wouldn't have a problem with achieving membership. For full membership you need to demonstrate that you need to have at least 5 years experience as a project professional. Some years ago we changed our name from the Association for Project Managers to the Association for Project Management for precisely this reason.
We do recognise specialities that are involved in project (and programme and portfolio) management as being suitable for membership.
To apply you would need details of projects that you have been involved in for a total of 5 years.
Let me know if you need any more information about this.
Thanks David, thats very helpful and much appreciated
