Proposed new SIG on knowledge sharing and collaboration

Hello Social Media Group! Can we talk about the proposed new SIG on knowledge sharing and collaboration? There's a team of us beavering away on preparing a proposal for the SIG Forum on 22 March. Social networking and social media are quite high on our list of topics - we recognise the benefits (and the pitfalls) of social media for establishing and maintaining relationships and for knowledge sharing. We'd really like your input to our proposal.

There's more about the proposed SIG in the general discussion and - to give you an idea of where we're coming from - here's the summary of a research project on social networking that some of us were involved in a couple of years ago.

What do you think of the idea of a SIG that includes social media topics? What would you like us to cover? What can we do to support you and your discussions?

How would you like to be involved? We will need more committee members when we get going and we're open to any ideas for collaborating with you.

Looking forward to some great conversations :-)

Well that's a bad start - wrong link for the general discussion about the new SIG :-(

Try this (tested this time).

Hi Judy,

Thanks for making contact.   The new proposed SIG sounds very interesting, and I would have thought the use of social media should be covered, given that that social media is a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.  I wonder if there is an opportunity for input from those of us here in the Social Media in PM Group in discussions around use of social media in the new SIG?

A number of us did a piece for Project magazine last year on the use of a range of social media tools (Feb 2011), and we may be able to expand upon this.

Have you thought about starting a Group in the Community to get discussions going?

I shall have a think about what topics could be covered and add to this discussion, others may have views as well.

Regards,

Ed

Of course there's an opportunity for input from the existing members of the Social Media group!

Ed, I confess I haven't seen your article in Project magazine. I'd like to, though. Please could you email it to me? I DM-ed you my email address.

How about we start with this, and take it from there? Any suggestions for topics to cover would be most welcome too - as would any other suggestions for ways we could work together.

We're submitting our proposal for the new SIG in a couple of weeks, but we don't need to have everything in place by then - the door will remain open for new ideas. Permanently, I hope!

Judy,

Such I thought a good initiative. I wanted to offer up a number of suggestions and feel free to kick around to build robustness:

i) I think there's a benefit to look backward before going forward. For example Hong Kong team developed a KM publication that's avaiable as a soft copy CD purchasable via APM for circa GBP 5 or GBP 10. One path to consider is to collaborate with APM Hong Kong Branch for an update of existing.

ii) Consider to explore world class Taxonomies in respect of Project Management, programme Management and Management of Portfolios.

iii) Consider to align / partner with existing forums. For example Henley Knowledge Management Forum is one of the Centres of Excellence at Henley Business School in the UK, a school well-known for executive development. Established in 2000, the KM Forum brings together business practioners, industry thought leaders, experts and adademics to help organizations tackle the new challenges presented by the knowledge economy. Members are large multi-national organizations in all sectots, as well as UK public and third sector bodies.

iv) Consider to initiate a blog based upon successful case studies/real life stories  wherein KM has been introduced into an organization and themed on developing knowledge sharing behaviours and using social media for knowledge sharing. The case studies could include the barriers identified and resistance to change and the design of ways and means to overcome such obstacles. Defining what success would look like in the first instance could prove helpful in prep. of business cases. What I hope comes out as both:

- individual learning

- organizational learning

For our new city in Madinah we distinguish between education providers: schools of excellence, colleges and Universities distinct from Knowledge creation via incubators, research etc.

I wish all good luck to the Start-up of such SIG and would be happy to support as a virtual team member from the desert lands of Arabia.

Richard

@Richard Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I have a copy of the APM KM CD but had forgotten about it - so thanks for the reminder. I'll take a look.

We're presenting our SIG proposal to APM next week - if we're successful we will certainly be exploring links with existing groups. We already have strong links with the Henley KM Forum and several other groups (as I expect you gathered from the link in the first post!). And blogging is certainly on our list of proposed activities.

Looking forward to future collaboration.
