PRINCE2® lead author, Andy Murray, will lead a discussion on effective project governance.

He will present a framework for governance and will then show how PRINCE2® can help with each element before facilitating a debate on governance obstacles and how to overcome them.

There is an increasing emphasis in all sectors for improved governance with some sectors, such as UK listed companies, having defined codes for corporate governance.

Governance covers all aspects of an organisation’s activities and therefore affects how projects are commissioned, directed and managed.

This presentation will review general guidance for effective governance and compare how, when used appropriately, PRINCE2®
supports good governance. It will cover 5 core elements of governance:

• Engage with stakeholders to define the organisational purpose and objectives (alignment)
• Define where decisions can be most effectively made (golden thread of delegation)
• Define when critical decisions need to be made (decision gates)
• Ensure transparency of decisions and actions and report their outcome (reporting)
• Corroborate through independent review (independent review)

Andy Murray was the lead author of PRINCE2 2009®, a contributing author to APM Body of Knowledge, version 6, a contributing author to P3M3 version 2.1 and a reviewer of ISO 21500.

In 2010, Andy was cited by APM as being one of the most influential people in project management today. Andy is a Chartered Director and currently runs the specialist programme and project management consulting firm, Outperform UK.

The session will include a debate regarding obstacles to effective governance and how to overcome them.
