This presentation will address approaches to public procurement highlighted by the Government's Construction Strategy and will overview proposals for new strategies. This event is suited to project management professionals at advance level.

The UK Government issued its Procurement Strategy in May of 2011calling for a change in the relationship between public authorities and the construction industry to ensure the Government consistently gets 'a good deal'. It intends to challenge current practices and demand more adoption of collaborative cultures; cost reduction and innovation in the supply chain.

This talk will examine the strategic objectives of this Strategy and compare these objectives with the policies and advice given to their members by professional institutions including the RIBA and RICS. In doing so reference will be made to British Standard for Construction Procurement, policies, standards and procedures 8534:2011 and if possible to current discussions of the Cabinet Office where released.

Roy Morledge is Professor of construction procurement at Nottingham Trent University. Roy is a chartered surveyor with a background in contracting and as a partner in a firm of chartered surveyors.
Currently a member of the Procurement Working Group of the RICS and a director of Nottingham Regeneration Ltd he actively retains his enthusiasm for procurement issues. He has authored a number of texts on procurement-related matters and is currently retained by the RICS to produce the procurement section of their new suite of guidance material - The Black Book.
