With the release of the portfolio management guidance from the Office of Goverment Commerce (OGC), and the examinations now available, interest in the sustainable approach to project managment is high. This presentation will be aimed at project managers with an intermediate level of experience.

The benefits for organisations that get the change right are significant, but how do you get portfolio management embedded in your organisation? Process, governance and structures, maybe the lingua franca of the domain, but it is creating a sustainable and scalable change in the organisation that will really define success or failure. Sustainable and scalable changes cannot be brought about by changes to process, structure or governance. These are essential components, but not sufficient. We have to facilitate an on-going change in the behaviours of the individuals and, we have to let technology assist us.

This presentation will highlight the processes and structures of portfolio management. It will focus, though, on the behavioural change requirements of all those involved – what are they, and how they can be achieved? We will then look at ways of making the transition both sustainable and scalable by bringing in elements of technology that both facilitate good practice and remove onerous manual processing to make portfolio management both sustainable and scalable.

James ButlerJames Butler has been a portfolio, programme and project management professional for over 10 years across domains as diverse as satellite communications, retail and IT.
