The APM group in Norwich met on 24 January to hear Peter Taylor speak about PMO’s - Benefit or Burden. After explaining why we should and then why we shouldn’t listen to him (a slightly risky strategy but one the Peter carried off well!) Peter led the group through the aims and objectives of the majority of PMOs. Drawing in useful statistics from a range of reputable surveys, he reinforced his thinking with facts, allowing the group to consider which type or types of PMO structures they had experienced and to weigh up the pros and cons of each structure.

On Tuesday 14th June the East of England branch enjoyed a useful talk on Managing risk at portfolio, programme and project levels, given by Peter Campbell, a highly experienced risk management consultant and recent chairman of the Risk SIG. Peter highlighted that often risk management is not done very well within organisations, and that risks should be considered at an early stage (business case) of all projects. There should be a risk management plan at all levels of an organisation (the portfolio level equates to the strategic or board level) and there should be clear escalation and communication processes in place between the levels.

Lean and Six Sigma are key process improvement methodologies and, like project management, focus on the triangle of time, cost and quality. Although the origins of Lean and Six Sigma are in the design and improvement of manufacturing processes, could the principles and tools play a part in achieving successful projects in any sector? Could effective project management enhance the implementation, embedding and sustaining of continuous improvement initiatives? Does project management enable Lean Six Sigma or does Lean Six Sigma enable project management? Which comes first? Elisabeth Goodman and John Riddell of RiverRhee Consulting led a highly interactive session in Stevenage for the East of England Branch to consider these questions and to look at delegates’ and speakers’ experiences of Lean and Six Sigma and Project Management.

Peter Taylor, formerly of Siemens and now with Infor, gave a passionate and insightful talk on modern Project Management Offices [PMOs] to the East of England branch recently. He described the many roles of good PMOs and highlighted that over 80% of companies now use PMOs, which normally report to EVP level in successful organisations, and are hence very influential. PMOs can be supportive, controlling or directive, or even a blend of these 3 models, and need to be designed specifically for the organisation’s particular requirements.
