The Lens Collective: A guide to seeing different perspectives in project management

These are some exercises which you can use to develop or reinforce communications in your teams. Instructions for each exercise can be found in the PDFs below.

Exercise 1 - 85 year-old woman ploughs into shop

This video clip forms the basis for experiential learning.  The exercise engages participants in experiencing mis-direction and poor observation by both the sender and receiver who interpret messages using their different knowledge bases and past experiences.

Below are some models, which you can use to develop or reinforce communications in your teams.

1) Why don't they listen

This mind map, created by Tim Lyons, explores the behavioural, personal and transactional elements of the individual words of “Why don’t they listen” giving insights into the where problems or issues might lie.  You may use this to model to analyse and problem solve,  for personal learning or team development.

This section provides video clips from individuals who participated in the ‘Why Don’t They Listen’ workshop run by the People SIG.

Each participant was asked:

  • Their name,
  • In less than 1 minute, describe what communications in a project means to them,
  • Describe communication in one word.

"Communication is the means by which information or instructions are exchanged. Successful communication occurs when the received meaning is the same as the transmitted meaning." APM Body of Knowledge

There is real evidence that suggests that often project failure can be attributed to ineffective communication.  The People SIG invested in exploring communications in the project context. Our aim is to provide insights to share.
