Stuart Dixon, PMO manager working for AXA PPP healthcare, joined the South East branch at the Reigate Manor Hotel on Thursday 8th March, to give a very interesting presentation, discussing the development of PMOs in their various guises, and giving an understanding of some of the services and functions that can be performed in and from a PMO (Project Management Office).

2012 has started very well for the South-East Branch of APM. On January 10th the Sixth Alan Webb Memorial Lecture was held at the Royal Engineers Museum in Gillingham.
Alan was a founder member of the Branch and he would have been so pleased to see us, as guests of the Royal Engineers, in such a prestigious venue. His pleasure would have been compounded by the distinguished speaker for the evening, Sue Kershaw, Executive Head of Programme and Contract Delivery for Transport at the Olympic Delivery Authority. Sue is a recently appointed Honorary Fellow of APM, as well as a prominent member of the ICE and author of their best practice guide to “clienting”.

The hidden dissuaders (with apologies to Vance Packard) was presented on behalf of the SE Branch at Rowfant House nr. Crawley on November 15th by Mary McKinlay
The evening started with a brief introduction of Mary and Vance Packard by our Chairman Martin Gillespie. Mary picked up where Martin had left off by thanking him for covering her first two slides!

Bryan Barrow delivered an interesting and enlightened workshop entitled “How to reduce project risk so you deliver on time and under budget” at the University of Greenwich campus in Chatham on Tuesday 4th October for the APM South Eastern Branch.

On Wednesday 14th September, “The case for a business case” was delivered by Peter Langley for the South East Branch at BAE in Rochester. A good number of people supported the event and many good examples and questions came from the floor during the evening.
Peter set out the evening as a three part sandwich, starting with the main crux of his thoughts on why we need the business case. He went into a varied array of examples and quotes from OGC / NAO, academic research and through to Norwegian public sector reports. Demonstrating the interesting use of language used to describe what happens when a weak business case is submitted and the reasons why this invariably drives failure into projects.

On April 5th Tony Teague provoked, entertained and reminded APM members of the South-East Branch of their responsibilities as members of a project management community. His talk was given at the Village Hotel in Maidstone and was entitled “Targeting Success and Excellence”.

Mark Kozak-Holland recently started his second tour of APM branches with his Titanic – lessons for modern projects presentation being given at Donnington Manor, Kent. Mark brings to light some of the misgivings on the design of the Titanic, cost saving errors and bad construction recommendations which resulted in the tragic loss of many passengers and crew of the ship.

The Village Hotel in in Kent opened its doors to the APM South East branch and delegates for a presentation about How project and programme managers will save the planet - or not.
Tom Taylor, APM Vice President spoke about How project and programme managers will save the planet - or not. The session provided a sustainability checklist that will enable project and programme managers to contribute to environmental factors and rise to challenges and opportunities in the future.

The Crowne Plaza in in Crawley opened its doors to the APM South East branch and delegates for a presentation about The Body of Knowledge refresh.
John Zachar of APM spoke about the process of the Body of Knowledge refresh so far and highlighted the key issues that are being discussed. John also included a high level update on other APM projects.

The Holiday Inn in Kent opened its doors to the APM South East branch and delegates for a presentation about the Bloodhound supersonic car - the adventure begins.
Richard Noble of Bloodhound gave a fascinating talk about the Bloodhound supersonic car.
The Bloodhound has been described as an 'Example Engineering Project', the Bloodhound Project is aiming for the Land Speed Record of 1000 mph. It is a truly iconic project for the 21st Century, laying the gauntlet for project management and engineering challenges.

The APM South East branch comprises over 1,000 individuals and over 30 corporate members based in Kent, Sussex and parts of Surrey.
A diverse range of events are held across the region presenting best practice in action, and information about new developments in the industry. There is no charge for the majority of these events, but booking in advance is mandatory.
The APM South East branch committee meets regularly at the Royal Wells Hotel in Tunbridge Wells.
