APM president announced as keynote speaker for IPMA World Congress

APM president Dr Martin Barnes CBE has been announced by PM–Greece as a keynote speaker for the 26th IPMA World Congress on project management. Dr Barnes will present on the topic of Integrating Project Management Standards, which is the overall theme of the congress opening in Crete’s Creta Maris Beach Resort on 29th October.

Dr Barnes, an honorary fellow of IPMA, will present on the three standards in project management that ensure the objectives of a project are achieved. They are completion time, total cost and, most importantly, the function or performance of the finished project. Project managers have to balance these often competing standards in all their decisions – big and small. The most important skill of the project manager is integrating the three standards in all decisions taken by themselves and by all the other decision makers contributing to the project.

These standards are more commonly represented as the ground-breaking time-cost-quality triangle that was announced by Dr Barnes at the IPMA congress in Stockholm in 1972. It was while he was studying for his doctorate at UMIST that Dr Barnes was able to demonstrate the value of integrating the project control areas of time, cost and quality making the classic triangular model of project control universally known today. He has since revised quality to performance.

Dr Barnes is a project management pioneer, a founding member of APM, an honorary fellow and past chairman. During his wide and varied 40-year career, he has pioneered, amongst other things, the New Engineering Contract (NEC). His career as a project manager has mainly been in the engineering and construction industries plus he has been an adviser to a number of important organisations internationally including the World Bank.

He is a trailblazing, experienced project manager and author, he has presented papers at many international conferences and has lectured all over the world. He has also talked about project management on TV and radio and has designed and run training courses.

The 26th IPMA World Congress will include opening plenary sessions, professional presentations and discussions sessions along 14 different themes (tracks), seven special sessions on important current aspects of project management, opening welcome reception, networking lunches and breaks, a world-class exhibition of PM-related products and services, and a spectacular gala banquet.
