APM Risk SIG Conference on Soft Skills

Date: 16/04/2008
Event organiser: APM Risk SIG

16th & 17th April 2008, All Saints Pastoral Centre, near St Albans

This is a 2 day event for everyone undertaking risk management. Departing from our normal single day format we are offering a facilitated workshop on day 1 followed by an interactive conference. You can attend just one of the days or both to enrich yourself.

Everyone undertakes risk management and at work we have formal processes to follow. We employ skills but those skills are usually self-taught and we tend to repeat those skills with small variations based upon latest experience rather than best practice.

Debate the hot topic of soft skills on day 1 with the leaders of risk management on our facilitated workshop. By the end of the day you will have practiced and had opportunity in a non-threatening environment to develop soft skills which support your ability to act as a professional risk exponent. The conference on day 2 will explore different aspects of best practice with case studies, presentations from experts as well as workshops to allow the exploration of soft skills topics.

Facilitated Workshop: This workshop will enable you to:
- Practise many interpersonal skills such as listening, influencing etc while debating the theory.
- Observe many different styles of interpersonal skill in others.
- Stretch yourself beyond your current boundaries and/or allow you to remain in their comfort zone and…
- …reflect on why you have done so.

Participants will be encouraged to personalise their development and record insights and learning points in the work packs handed out. Time will be allowed during the day for personal reflection. The packs will also contain tips and hints, which form the handout notes for the day.

Conference
Explore the different aspects of best practice with case studies, presentations from experts as well as workshops to allow the exploration of soft skills topics. Experts presenting include:
• Martin Cross (Turner and Townsend), 2007 APM Winner, explaining his project and focusing on risk and people
• Dr Eddie Fisher, 2007 APM Winner, presenting his competence and behaviour model for skills in working with people
• Gary Purser, international facilitator, renowned for work on group energy
