I was interested to read an account of what happened at last year’s Volunteers’ Forum in the pages of the December edition of Network magazine, which in particular included some information about Continuing Professional Development (CPD).The article refers to an on-going research project from Kingston University Business School. Apparently 88 % of respondents to their survey (what survey I thought) felt that CPD adds value to their work and enables them to do their job better. As many as 65% thought it so important that they have actually paid for it!The article states that the session was...

I was made aware, at an AGM earlier this week, that the APM is to require proof of CPD when applying for Membership renewal in future. That seems very fair to me. My other professional body, the CIOB wants to see the same thing as, so I believe, do most of them. But it seems we are not going to be able to do that on line; we will have to down-load a document and post that off which didn’t seem to meet with general approval. We were told that IT problems prevented CPD records being kept on line. The outcome was that I kind of got nominated to raise this issue as a Blog. To...

A topic came up at the Midlands Branch AGM last night, regarding the topic of CPD tracking on the APM Website. I am all for this as it could keep a log of events the membership attended and would also assist me in being able to log other types of CPD such as coaching, mentoring and practical experience. How many other members would like to see this available?

On this day in 1972, 78 people paid their £1 subscription to become the first members of the Association for Project Management (APM). Forty years later APM is now the largest professional body of its kind in Europe with over 19,700 individual and 500 corporate members.A lot has happened in 40 years. Most notably is APM President Martin Barnes (pictured right alongside APM Chairman Mike Nichols) creating the Time-Cost-Quality...

For the first time the benefits of investing thousands of pounds each year in project processes, training and qualifications can be quantified.Leading R&D company Roke has created a PM competency framework to log and analyse qualifications, training – generic management, core PM skills and CPD – and bid and project experience. The idea, says Roke projects director Russell Taylor, is to ensure the best possible return on investment by focusing on project results.“We didn’t make this investment on a whim,” he said. “We did it because project value, risk and complexity dramatically increased...

In the recent Project magazine (July 2011) I make the case for continuous professional development (CPD) to enable project managers to deliver in an ever changing project environment. In my opinion, without continually improving ourselves by undertaking CPD and utilising arrange of media such as, books, professional and academic articles, blogs, YouTube, attending seminars, etc, that as a profession, project management will suffer in the long run. Project managers are usually at the forefront of developments, pushing the bounds, leading projects – but do we need to undertake...
