Organisations are failing to support the adequate provision of continuing professional development (CPD) in the workplace – despite the obvious benefits to employees. A few months ago I received an email explaining that in late in 2012 there was recognition from within APM HQ and the Branch Steering Group that about 90% of total APM expenditure is directed towards CPD events (I believe this to actually be 90% of the branches expenditure). The email went on to explain that events are attended by approximately 10% of individual members and that a very small amount is spent on engagement of corporate members, universities, colleges, schools, or indeed the 90% of individual members who don’t go to events. I was interested to read an account of what happened at last year’s Volunteers’ Forum in the pages of the December edition of Network magazine, which in particular included some information about Continuing Professional Development (CPD).The article refers to an on-going research project from Kingston University Business School. Apparently 88 % of respondents to their survey (what survey I thought) felt that CPD adds value to their work and enables them to do their job better. I was made aware, at an AGM earlier this week, that the APM is to require proof of CPD when applying for Membership renewal in future. That seems very fair to me. My other professional body, the CIOB wants to see the same thing as, so I believe, do most of them. But it seems we are not going to be able to do that on line; we will have to down-load a document and post that off which didn’t seem to meet with general approval. A topic came up at the Midlands Branch AGM last night, regarding the topic of CPD tracking on the APM Website. I am all for this as it could keep a log of events the membership attended and would also assist me in being able to log other types of CPD such as coaching, mentoring and practical experience.How many other members would like to see this available?
