 WINNER

PROJECT: HMRC: COVID-19 Programme
ENTERED BY: Jo Rowland

The COVID-19 Programme turned HMRC around on a sixpence and moved us from being tax gatherers into monetary supporters of employers, employees and the self-employed.

The job retention scheme (CJRS) has benefitted 1.1m employers and 9.1m jobs have been furloughed: we've paid out nearly £22bn. For the self-employment scheme (SEISS), 2.6m people have claimed grants worth £7.5bn. Statutory Sick Pay Provisions have supported 45,000 employers and 153,000 individuals with £23m.

We provided much needed help and funds to businesses and individuals in desperate need to ensure that the UK population and economy are better placed to weather the pandemic.

PROJECT: Arup: Keyn Glas - Highways England Environmental Designated Funds
ENTERED BY: Joe Reid

Keyn Glas delivered environmental, social and cultural benefits across 50km² of Cornwall’s diverse landscape. The programme has proven the “art of the possible” for an organisation that would not normally undertake this type of work at such scale.

Innovation within the fabric of the programme demonstrated the relevance of programme and project management in a world where the challenges of climate change and the need for a more sustainable future meets the realities of achieving action. Delivering on others’ land, protecting the investment and nurturing environmental capital will only become more relevant to the profession, now and in the future.

PROJECT: Sellafield Ltd: Beta/ Gamma Remediation Programme
ENTERED BY: Christopher Walton

One of the world’s largest environmental clean-ups has gathered significant pace, thanks to the Beta/Gamma Remediation Programme at Sellafield, the UK’s most complex nuclear site.
In the last year, the programme has removed one of the site’s ‘intolerable risks’ and its highest non-nuclear risk (Europe’s largest asbestos removal).

It has completed the defueling of the world’s first industrial-scale nuclear reactors and delivered measurable financial value for the UK taxpayer by enabling faster decommissioning and by delivering under budget.

At the same time, it has driven technical innovation, and shared programme learning and best practice within and beyond the nuclear industry.
