Ryan joined National Grid (a UK and US energy company) in 2016. As head of electricity construction he leads a large multi-skilled team (270 NG staff and 4000 contractors) and is responsible for a national portfolio that ranges from sub-station enhancement, overhead line replacement to the London Power tunnels and inter-connectors. He also serves on two Executive boards within National Grid.
Ryan was on active duty in the Royal Navy Submarine Service from 1991 until 2014, serving on 4 diesel submarines and 6 nuclear powered attack submarines. He also worked for the Royal Netherlands Navy (2 Years), US Navy (2 Years) and Counter Terrorism forces.
The zenith of his military assignments was Captain of the nuclear powered submarine HMS Turbulent (2008-2011), where he was privileged to lead 484 men on covert clandestine missions worldwide.
After leaving the military, he led at Shell UK. He successfully enabled cultural change while leading their flagship platform ‘Shearwater’ conducting high pressure/high temperature gas exploration/production/export, through the recent slump in oil prices, achieving success.
Ryan has completed Masters level degrees in defence studies (Kings College London) and science and technology (Kingston University). He is alumni of the Windsor Leadership Programme and a published author (SSN 14, Submarine command).
