Simon Coles

At Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) Simon’s responsibilities are for the development and maintenance of the integrated programme for the restoration of the Dounreay Nuclear Licensed Site.

The scope of which is to place the site into a condition requiring minimal intervention and supervision until such time as it is presents “no harm” to the public or environment.

Simon is a chartered engineer with nearly thirty years’ experience in the nuclear sector; he has a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering and a master’s degree in business administration.

Having started his career at Sellafield, where he filled project management and engineering management roles, he moved to Dounreay in the mid-1990s and has had a wide range of operational, project, commercial and programme management roles.

He left DSRL in 2010 and joined Cavendish Nuclear before being seconded back to the site initially as Prime Contract Manager with the remit for the management of the contract between DSRL and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority before taking on his current role.

Simon has contributed to publications by IAEA in Vienna and was a Director of Decom North Sea where he brought his nuclear decommissioning management experience to the oil and gas sector.

Presenting on: Strategic Challenges in A Decommissioning Context

Synopsis: Simon will present his personal reflections of working at Dounreay to discuss the strategic challenges that arise as an industrial closure programme moves towards completion. These will include the challenge of attracting, developing and retaining people with the necessary skills over the period to the end of the work.

He will also discuss the challenge of ensuring that the project outputs align with the desired benefits of the programme throughout its schedule.
