A valid approach to project assurance

Aviva, Wellington Row, York YO1 6FZ

At this event, we will explore the basic principles and key techniques of project assurance, in ways that make them accessible to project professionals engaged in projects across the full range of size, complexity and difficulty.

Using a participative approach to tailor the event to the audiences needs, we will explore what project assurance is there to do, and how it can be tailored to a variety of circumstances. In doing so, we will consider familiar topics, like how much assurance is enough? And less obvious ones, like who benefits from assurance?

We aim to shine some light on an aspect of project working, that is sometimes considered intimidating or burdensome, and show how it can be supportive and helpful to the project team.

We will look at current practices and future developments in project assurance, to stimulate informed appraisal of individual projects' assurance arrangements, and to identify possible sources of information and advice to suit a wide range of needs.

Until November 2017, Roy Millard was responsible for the planning and delivery of all internal audits of project and programme management within Transport for London. He now works as an independent consultant (trading as P3 risk and assurance), providing advice and support on matters of governance, risk and assurance in project organisations.

Roy has an Honours degree and a post-graduate Diploma in Management Studies; is a Fellow of APM and a full member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology; was until recently an APM Trustee; and is the founder and Chairman of the APM Assurance Specific Interest Group (SIG).

Dave Lovitt spent more than 25 years working on major IT and wider business change projects for HMC&E (and subsequently HMRC). He has been a strong advocate of public sector involvement in the wider profession through active membership of APM, and was awarded Registered Project Professional status in 2014.

Since retiring from full time employment in 2016, he has become a committee member of the APM Assurance SIG, and has helped to organise and deliver a number of events, including the recent Assurance SIG Conference in Birmingham. He has an ambition to make project assurance feel less scary and more supportive, especially for small to medium organisations.

This event is suitable for professionals with an intermediate level of experience.
