Benefits management: Making it real

Leeds City Council, Merrion House,Merrion Way, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS2 8BB

Kevin Parry is a Programme Director at NHS Digital and has been leading a major benefits management improvement programme for the £2.5bn portfolio of around 150 projects to enable transformations in health and care in England.

In this thought-provoking presentation, he will present his insights into the real-world complexities of benefits management, from identifying and forecasting, to proof of benefits being realised. He will contrast the benefits management process in the APM Body of Knowledge and Benefits Cycle model with the challenges of the real-world application of these principles and some potential solutions to making them work while keeping stakeholders on side throughout. He will use examples from the private and public sector but specifically on the aspects of public sector benefits forecasting on major projects and programmes and some ways that these can be overcome.

This interactive and thoughtful presentation will be useful to both people starting on the journey of managing benefits and those with practical experience who are interested in learning more about one of the most complex environments to manage benefits in anywhere in the world and what lessons we can take from improving how this is done on advanced technology and data programmes.

The NHS and Social Care in England employs around 1.5 million people in 700 federated organisations and treats 1.5million people every 24 hours. The government spent around £125 billion pounds on the NHS in 2017/18 and yet demand continues to outstrip supply and hiring enough staff and doctors is a continual challenge.

Kevin is a Fellow of APM, a published author on managing change and has worked extensively in major projects in both the public and private sector as well as in Asia, Europe and the UK. He holds a post-graduate diploma in Management and is a guest lecturer at the University of Manchester Faculty of Science and Technology on the MSc Programme in Managing Projects.
