Change Management in a Project Environment

Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen Business School, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen, AB10 7QE

This event will cover the key principles of change management, show how it can be applied in a project environment and illustrate what good change management looks like.

Projects and programmes are all about change, but project management and change management are different, and do we really do our change management well? Providing a new product or capability via a project or programme is one thing, but unless the organisation can be successfully changed in order to derive benefit, the investment may be wasted. The change management need is often not well understood, or even ignored, and in so many cases, this means that projects either fail to deliver what was envisioned, or worse, deliver nothing at all.

A lot of what we as project managers do is about implementing transformation and change, and this involves people working and behaving in a different way, in a new world. Change management is key to embedding any such change. This event will look at what change management is all about and we will use real life case studies to illustrate key points and learnings. It will get you to think about your approach to change management in project environments. You will also see how the APM Enabling Change SIG can help you to improve the change capability of your organisation, your teams and your individuals. The presentation will include information on the activities of the SIG to date and its plans for the future.

Donna Unitt is the Head of Delivery for Rocket Consulting and heads up the methods and standards theme for the APM Enabling Change SIG. Donna is an experienced, ambitious and driven IT and change management professional, with a specialisation in supply chain logistics.

With a strong focus on implementing warehouse and transport applications into large organisations, Donna has over 20 years of managing business change across all levels and cultures.  Having worked in project and programme management roles, Donna developed an interest in a more formal approach to change management during her time with a large 3PL.

On moving to Rocket 3 years ago, Donna joined the Enabling Change SIG and worked on developing the methods and standards theme, taking it over in January this year. Donna has recently become a qualified change management professional and has developed a methodology for change management and business transformation within Rocket.

This event is suitable for professionals with an intermediate level of experience.
