Project success through excellence in procurement and contract management

Holiday Inn Notts/Derby, Bostocks Lane, Sandiacre, Nottingham NG10 5NJ

All projects are managed (at least in part) through contracts. As we have seen many times, good contract management enables projects to succeed, whereas poor contract management often leads to project failure and value destruction.

In June, the APM’s Contracts & Procurements SIG published their long awaited “APM Guide to Contracts and Procurement for project, programme and portfolio managers"…or “the Procurement Guide” for short.
The guide was launched at the APM SIG conference in London on 12 July 2017.

  • Dr Jon Broome, Chair of the SIG and co-editor of the guide, will give an overview from which you will learn:
  • why (almost) every project manager should have knowledge and some skill in contracts & procurement to be effective;
  • modern developments in contracts & procurement due to the rise in complexity and hence the need for collaboration;
  • the seven stage procurement and contract management model and the level two activities that sit beneath them (which could just be things you should think about for a small procurement);
  • small things that highly effective project managers (who manage through contracts) and project procurement professionals do consistently well.

Dr Jon Broome is the managing consultant of Leading Edge Projects Consulting Ltd and has been Chair of the Contracts & Procurement SIG for some time. He is the co-editor of the Contracts & Procurement Guide. He consults internationally on contract strategy, drafting contracts and technical requirements, dispute resolution and as an expert witness. While his ‘home’ sector is construction and heavy engineering, it has also included assignments in the IT, aerospace, shipbuilding, energy and defence sectors. While each sector has its nuances, he has found that the principles and processes in the guide hold true regardless of which sector you operate in.

This event is suitable for professionals up to an intermediate level.
