Systems Thinking and the application of soft systems methodologies
Systems Thinking enables the early identification and evaluation of the operational context, solution options and the best fit life cycle, methodology and framework.
In this presentation, the speaker will enlighten you with his experience of soft systems methodologies that can be applied in projects with VUCA (Volatility; Uncertainty; Complexity; Ambiguity) characteristics.
The session will consider the business context, evaluating multiple viewpoints and the approach to developing business change solution options before recommending a course of action to the project board.
Designing and delivering business change projects in complex operational environments requires engagement with a wide range of stakeholders, who often have conflicting requirements and expected outcomes. Applying a collaborative systems thinking approach early in the project life cycle will help identify and resolve the project challenges and ultimately foster a shared understanding and definition of the project vision and road map.
Systems Thinking is a core value of agile methodologies and frameworks and the session will include observations of systems thinking in the Scaled Agile (SAFe) framework. SAFe adopts a holistic approach spanning the system solution itself, the enterprise operational context and the value streams incrementally creating the solution.
Ultimately this leads to systems thinking of hybrid project structures, methodologies, frameworks and tool sets tailored to suit the dynamics of the project and its stakeholders.
Phil Knights has over 30 years of programme and project management experience, spanning a wide range of business change projects in the UK and internationally. He is a committee member of the APM Systems Thinking SIG, a Scaled Agile (SAFe) practitioner and a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).
Foundation training started as an engineering management apprentice in the MOD’s naval dockyards, followed by a career with tier 1 sub-system supply chain partners in support of platform prime contractors. This led to his current role at General Dynamics Mission Systems, which is a leading defence prime contractor and complex systems integrator and is the Transition Partner for the MOD’s MORPHEUS programme – for the next generation of Tactical Communications Information System.
Phil has progressively adopted systems (holistic) thinking as a core way of working, which is applied to all phases of the project life cycle along with the versatility to select the optimum agile, or hybrid, project management methodology and framework.
