The Kings Theatre Trust: A hands-on approach to programme management

The Kings Theatre Trust invites APM followers to a fascinating evening, which there will be a presentation on the programme and project management undertaken since 2001 by the board of directors at the Kings Theatre.

A guided tour of the auditorium and backstage areas will provide an insight into the difficulties of balancing heritage values with business management, with the chance to see the projects which have been completed and areas still requiring upgrade and renovation.

The presentation will detail the range of projects managed by directors of the Kings Theatre since the Trust’s appointment as operators in 2001 under the ownership of Portsmouth City Council.

Difficulties of politics, the economic climate, and bringing a Grade II historic building up to the standards of health and safety and audience expectations make the journey an interesting one. A feasibility study and business case for the next tranche of works are in development, as there is much more to do over the coming years.

Dr Sue McClory, the company secretary, joined the board as technical director in 2001, working to secure the future of the Kings Theatre against the threat of demolition. Once the Kings was operating under the trust’s management Sue took control of day-to-day matters on behalf of the directors, all of whom are voluntary charity trustees.

Responsible for a capital investment in excess of £2 million, this presentation will highlight the practical aspects of the long-term planning of a programme of projects, the development of risk management, and the appointment of professional consultants to work as part of the team. All projects have been scheduled to allow the theatre to operate as usual to reduce business interruption and maintain a vital income stream.
