Midlands branch received a talk from agilest Brian Wernham at Santander Milton Keynes which guided 30 members through a case history from the FBI showing how agile project management can work. The talk explored in some detail the tenet that waterfall development is not suitable for many IT type projects and too often results is chaos and leads both to dissatisfied users and angry and disappointed investors. The agile approach succeeded for the FBI and provides another tool for the project manager. The subject of Brians talk was covered in some detail within his recent book Agile Project Management for Government which was made available at discounted prices for attendees.
A lively question and answer session followed and Brian set two questions for debate in groups which concluded that the Agile technique could be used in other circumstances and for fixed price developments but careful consideration must be given to suitability. As a prominent member of the Governance of Project Management SIG Brian was also aware that governance issues must also be carefully considered and understood by project sponsors.
