Bubbles in Macau

The APM Hong Kong branch July event was held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on 13th July 2010. It featured Steve Chamberlain, commercial director in Macau, and Geoff Benham, creative director of the City of Dreams (CoD) casino and hotels project for Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. in Macau. The presentation entitled Bubbles in Macau was attended by 41 members and guests and was an interesting and enjoyable event.
The presentation firstly described the administrative nightmare of the CoD, comprising 400 trade contracts, 400 specialist contracts and 4000 purchase orders. The presentation also addressed the many and varied creative themes in the fascinating development and how they were actually constructed. There was an international team of vendors of specialist lighting, water effects, laser system, etc. The CoD has a spectacular under-water casino, the first of its kind in the world. It also has the worlds largest virtual Vquarium (3 m long x 6.5 m tall), two bubbles (one within the other), and the most complex theatre (40 m long x 30 m wide x 18 m tall) in the world. The CoD was officially opened on 1st June 2009 with no formal resolution of disputes.
In managing the procurement, contracts and administration, Geoff treated the film industry somewhat the same as the construction industry. In overcoming huge challenges, he focused on the international team work, got the right people to do the right things at the right time. This is the most invaluable experience he shared on the CoD with the audience.
