Project and programme managers were advised that getting on the front foot and mitigating risk could lead to an increased likelihood of a positive outcome.

Peter Fielder; managing director, performance excellence at BAE Systems; was interviewed last month at the annual APM Conference where he said: If programme leaders are reacting to circumstances that evolve on their programmes, but are not proactively managing risk then that is a difficult place to be.

Peter took to the conference platform to draw on his experience from three decades of managing complex programmes to highlight the challenges that complexity creates. He also pinpointed the wide array of factors that are driving complexity in projects inexorably higher.

Peter also highlighted the key success factors for managing todays ever-increasing level of project complexity, by ensuring that the best quality processes are applied by suitably qualified, experienced and motivated people. Get this right, and the result will be more predictable, reliable and repeatable programme outcomes that deliver the desired benefits, while retaining the flexibility to respond to change in an increasingly uncertain and unpredictable world.

Peter finished with a rallying call and a need to collaborate with fellow project and programme professionals. This country has an incredible history of managing extremely large, complex programmes so we do know how to do it.

We can share that knowledge between us and we can all support each other to accomplish even higher achievements on these more complex programmes.
