Name: Anthony Dobbie
Membership grade: MAPM, RPP, CPM
Volunteer role: Scotland Branch Committee - Event Coordinator
1. Why did you decide to become a volunteer with APM?
When I was originally progressing my CPM qualification, I enjoyed attending the local events and seminars as part of my CPD and with general interest in what was available in the PM Community. After attending a corporate event dinner, I was keen to get involved and contribute back to the community the experiences I had benefitted from.
2. What benefits have you gained from being an APM volunteer?
I have gained a wealth of understanding of how the APM operates from a volunteer point of view both as a provider of qualifications and professional development and as a company/charity. There's a lot more than meets the eye! I currently act as events coordinator in our committee which means I have to oversee and track the events progress against our targets, ensuring that we commit to our planning targets. I take pride identifying new events, challenges and opportunities within the committee and offering these to the PM community at large. It’s also very rewarding and satisfying, running the events, challenges and conferences for the APM membership.
The reviews and outcomes experienced by the attendees are always discussed in order to improve and act on the feedback going forward. It’s also a great chance to network with fellow professionals, offer advice and indeed seek information for yourself as well as adding new facets to my career. It’s important to consider the personal benefits: giving up my free time voluntarily is as rewarding to me as I hope it is to the community generally.
3. What would your top tip be to an APM member looking to become a volunteer?
Volunteering for the APM requires only your time and enthusiasm. You should ensure that you can offer this commitment for as long as you propose to be part of it!
