This event provided an overview of the tools and techniques now being used to improve the efficiency of the construction sector and deliver more for less.

Many of these tools have come from other industries and require careful application if they are to deliver full value and not alienate people. The range of approaches covered during this presentation will include Lean, Six Sigma, Rapid improvement Events and bottom-up collaborative planning and culture change methodologies.

Delegates attending gained an understanding of what the main approaches are, how they can be applied to construction processes, who should be involved and the roles they should play. The factors critical to success when implementing an improvement programme were outlined and the pitfalls to look out for considered.

Stuart Smith has been working in the field of business improvement for over 25 years and in the construction and infrastructure sector for over 10 years, applying Lean and Six Sigma approaches within large client organisations and their supply chains.

Stuart regularly contributes a Viewpoint article in the NCE and has recently co-authored a book entitled ‘Build Lean’ setting out the managerial and organisational challenges to implementing Lean Transformation in the sector and detailing some useful approaches that can help overcome them.
