Mike Coker

Head of Change Delivery RSPB

Mike spent 25 years delivering project, programme and portfolio management and management consultancy in a range of industries including public sector, communications, hi-tech, utilities and third sector.  He is now doing his dream job, applying what he has learnt over that time to a charity that he has been a lifelong member of, as the Head of Change Delivery at the RSPB.

With the help of a small team, he has improved the effectiveness of project, programme and portfolio management across the organisation, and is currently working with the RSPB’s directors and senior managers to improve the leadership of change.  He believes that project managers can change the world, but is struggling to come up with an appropriate set of SMART objectives.

Tittle of presentation:
Good Governance: Is it for the birds?

Synopsis:
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds runs more than 1000 projects and programmes at any one time delivering conservation, education and supporter engagement in all 4 countries of the UK, and overseas.

Working with a wide range of partners, these projects go from simple infrastructure projects to complex behaviour change programmes.

Mike will talk about his experience of introducing appropriate governance across different types and scales of projects, in remote locations, in the challenging environment that the charity sector currently face, whilst trying to get the best out of enthusiastic and driven project sponsors.

Hopefully, you will be surprised by how relevant some of the RSPB’s governance challenges are to your organisation, and may even learn something from Mike’s experiences.
