Newsletter - February 2014

Dear fellow member of the Portfolio Management (PfM) SIG,

Best wishes from the PfM SIG Committee for a successful 2014.

Organisations across all business sectors continue to face a wide range of challenges, not least being to ensure that their significant investment in change initiatives deliver the desired results. The role that portfolio management can play in achieving that aim is, we believe, becoming a little better recognised.

However, there is still a long way to go and that is especially true in respect to getting the value of PfM higher up the executive agenda. The SIG had a special event on that subject last October (look out for a summary in the March edition of Network) which demonstrated that there is much work to do if PfM is to have the optimum impact.

As a committee, and using feedback from previous events and surveys etc, we are developing a range of ideas designed to provide SIG members with opportunities in which to participate taking PfM forward for the benefit of individuals as well as organisations.

The themes that underpin the latest SIG business plan are:

• Developing new knowledge (e.g. creating source material based on “what works”)
• Disseminating knowledge (e.g. finding better ways of providing access to PfM knowledge)
• Engaging with the CxO community (e.g. supporting APM research into how to reach this group)
• SIG membership engagement (e.g. providing opportunities for participation in SIG activities)
• Working with APM (e.g. collaboration with other SIGs and pan-APM initiatives, such as the “conditions for project success” project)

A major platform for taking some of this forward will be a joint conference with the Benefits Management SIG, “SIG Creating and sustaining an environment for success”, which is being held 6th March, which will have speakers from B&Q, Heathrow Airport Ltd, Cabinet Office, City of London Corporation, London Borough of Haringey, Rolls Royce, and Westminster Council – find out more here.

During the year ahead we look forward to seeing many of you at events and/or contributing to the programme of activities as they evolve.

There are many ways in which you get more involved, including:

• Participation at events, such as sharing your ideas and experiences
• Join the debate on hot topics, such as via our blog (here is a link to our site)
• Take an active part in one of our planned initiatives (if you have a few spare hours occasionally, please consider joining a small group of volunteers with whom we intend to engage further during the year)
• Consider becoming a committee member (Please note that the SIG AGM is to be held on May 15th for which we are planning a topical speaker and another interesting debate)

Therefore, if you wish to know more about anything mentioned above please get in touch through the usual PfM SIG link.

On behalf of the PfM SIG Committee, Stephen Parrett (Chair, 2013-14)
