Martin TaylorIntroduction from the Chairman: Martin Taylor

Our latest newsletter will focus on the progress made with our Change Practitioner Groups, which is a key part of our Collaboration strategy. We feel this is the way to develop and share understanding around change management and develop membership both of the APM and the Enabling Change SIG. Initiatives with the Open University, UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) and the Knowledge SIG are mentioned below.

An update on the Change Capabilities and Methods work is included and details of recent and future events.

We are currently reviewing the structure of the SIG and will report on our conclusions in the next newsletter.

Industry Change Practitioner Groups – Bob Thomas

Bob ThomasIn a new initiative the Enabling Change SIG continues to make progress in establishing its Industry Change Practitioner Groups to better understand how different industries manage and successfully implement their change programmes;

• With over 50 Senior Change Practitioners contacted in the UK, along with 10 Academics and some 7 leading Authors, the Enabling Change SIG has now established two Industry Change Practitioner Groups – Transportation and Public Services.

• Each group is made up of around 5 leading Change Practitioners, an Academic and an associated Author in the field. All confirmed members of Industry Change Practitioner Groups are senior staff and are requested to provide a short biography along with a photograph so that a Group “Wallboard” can be created and distributed to all members.

• Once a group is established, it is expected to meet three times a year to discuss selected themes of Change. At the introductory group meeting, Bob Thomas, the Industry Change Practitioner Groups Lead confirms the aims and objectives and agrees the Terms of Engagement with all members. As “Thought Leaders” in the field of Change within their own Industry Group, members determine what outputs result from any meeting.

The Transportation Change Practitioner group is made up of the following leading businesses and representatives:

Change Practitioners
o TfL – Simon Williams, Head of Business Change Project Management ,
o Future Railways – Mariam Siddiqui, Change Director / Programme Manger
o Network Rail – Andy Stiles, Business Change Manager;
o London Heathrow Airport Ltd – Simon Wilcox, Business Change Lead
o Arriva – Uthim Hatari, Operations Manager.

Change Academic
o Professor Tim Brady of Brighton University, who specialises in Innovation.

Change Author
o Esther Cameron, an experienced Author/ Change Practitioner who has
co-written the key reference book for APM members on Change Management.

At its introductory meeting held on 21st January, where all members attended, it was amazing how 2 hours just flew by. The group were very open and focused and eventually decided to first appreciate the current challenges and barriers to change which exist within Transportation. This will be the focus of its first innovation meeting to be held on 16th March.

The Public Services Change Practitioner Group currently has the following selected representatives;

Change Practitioners
o NHS – Dr Julia Taylor, National Programme Director for Advancing Change Team
o British Council - Alasdair Ramage, Transformation Director
o The Home Office – Scott Fielding, Deputy Programme Director.
o HMRC – Maureen Whyman, Lean Business Change Consultant;
o Police Scotland – John Hawkins, Head of Organisational Development

Change Academic
o Andrew Schuster, completing Doctorate at Cranfield University in “Exploring Projectification in the Public Sector”

Change Author
o Andrew has also contributed to the Cabinet Office (2010) Machinery of Government Change handbook and to many of the suite of Cabinet Office owned Best practice guides covering Programme/ Project delivery – particularly around Risk Management.

At its first meeting held on 5th February the introductory challenges and discussions around change complexity were fascinating and interestingly the group wished to include other major organisations and more formally embed its purpose around “Thought Leadership”. This group is due to meet next on the 10th March and will probably re-focus its attention to produce a fully meaningful TOR for the group before developing its own innovation themes.

The next Change Practitioner Industry Group that we plan to establish is The Financial Services – Banking Group. If you are a senior change professional in Financial Services do please contact Rupert Hill.

The above developments should result in eighteen blue chip organisations being involved in Industry Change Practitioner Groups by 1st April 2015 and the plan is for 30 organisations by 31st December 2015.

Collaboration – Martin Taylor

Representatives from the Open University attended the recent SIG Committee meeting to explore how we could work effectively together. The Open University’s Change Community has over 300 members and we will be developing ways of sharing and improving change understanding.

We are also in discussion with Liverpool University, representing UCISA (Universities and Colleges Information Systems Association) Project and Change Management Group which has around 300 members, again to develop ways of working together for mutual benefit.

The SIG is also working with the Knowledge SIG to consider a consistent approach to collaboration that will develop knowledge communities, to share and improve our understanding of specific areas like change.

Capabilities and Methods – Elisabeth Goodman

We have been working with the rest of the SIG to shape our strategy for 2015, and will be sharing more of this in the next newsletter. In the meantime, here is a quick recap of what we have done over the past few months;

1. Identifying and engaging contacts: We are delighted to say that Craig Brannigan and Hannah Melville are now formally supporting our work. They are each taking the lead for a specific activity within our strategy, and will also be supporting us in other activities.

2. Defining and confirming headings: We recently released a revised version of our reference document on change management headings in response to suggestions from our community. See here for details.

3. Defining and delivering knowledge assets: We had previously released a ‘common vocabulary’ on our website in July 2014 and a library of professional knowledge / references in October 2014. The latter was also updated in January based on comments and input from SIG members. Both of these documents can also be found here.

We also issued a survey to collect case studies during 2014, and although we only received a few replies, we look forward to collecting more in 2015. Please find the link here if you would like to contribute a case study.

We have about another dozen people providing input to the Capabilities & Methods work and their details will be shared in a future newsletters.
