New for 2023 the Judges Choice Award is given at the discretion of the Awards Steering Group to recognise an outstanding runner up from a selection of strong categories. 

In late 2022, Shell commenced operations at its new state-of-the-art Polymers plant, completing the transformation of a century old, disused zinc smelter, in a region of western Pennsylvania impacted by the downturn in the steel industry.

A mega engineering and construction feat, the new multibillion dollar Shell Polymers Monaca Plant, represents the first major polyethylene manufacturing complex in the Northeastern United States and according to an economic impact study, is poised to help add nearly $4 billion dollars to the State’s economy each year, delivering significant short- and long-term value to nearby communities as well as regional and national economies.

Our conservation and river-engagement project was created to unlock the River Severn for wildlife and people. A partnership of four organisations seized a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to restore connectivity for migratory fish. Working together, we have successfully unlocked 158 miles of habitat for endangered migratory fish.

However, the project was equally focused on helping more people feel connected to the river, inspiring them to care for the river and be advocates for its wildlife long into the future. Our project created millions of touchpoints where people of all ages, interests and backgrounds could engage with one amazing river.

Successful migration of services to Microsoft Azure for a nuclear decommissioning Site Licence Company (SLC). An incredibly pressured project, with significant risk and sensitivity given the nature of our client and the situation faced - a key supplier hosting both ours and our customer's data entering liquidation.

This was an unplanned, unexpected 'emergency' project that had to be initiated, planned and delivered under significant pressure and was completed at great success.

HMRC’s Enterprise Security Programme is a three-year, multi-million pound initiative which is delivering a diverse portfolio of change, ranging from tactical measures to strategic transformation across the entire organisation, including targeted security improvements, innovations to our critical national services, safeguarding public confidence and critical services to our customers.

Despite adversity and tight budgets, outstanding leadership, stakeholder management and collaboration has meant that the Programme has mitigated significant financial and organisational constraints to successfully meet its objectives as stated in the Programme Business Case delivering on time and on budget.

Dr. Vicknayson Thevendran was appointed in early 2021 as the Project Manager for the 112km greenfield Morava Corridor Motorway in central Serbia which recently opened its first two sections to traffic four months early.

This Project will connect Serbia and Pan-European Corridors in a low-lying flood plain along the Morava River. Vick is a visible leader with 20+ years of experience on highway, rail, and heavy-civil projects having previously performed as the delivery director on the Riyadh Metro Project. He’s committed to our profession, with articles published in project and risk management accepted by the International Journal of Project Management.

The Network Rail Research and Development team are happy to nominate Sophie Davies as the Young Project Professional of the year. An exceptional project manager, Sophie has had to utilise various techniques such as agile methodologies, knowledge of business change and software development to effectively deliver her projects within the Civils & Sustainability Programme.

She has managed effectively in challenging project environments and her diligent and conscientious approach to work has been demonstrated by her excellent control over the projects that she manages. Sophie always goes the extra mile to deliver excellence, informed by her commitment to diversity, inclusion and wellbeing.
