Introduction to Setting

Definition

The relationship of the project, programme or portfolio with its host organisation.

General

Projects, programmes and portfolios do not exist in isolation. P3 management is influenced by its environment and works closely with other broad management disciplines.

Every project, programme or portfolio has a host organisation. That organisation will apply strategic management to set out its goals and reason for existence. It will then deliver its core products and services through operations management. Strategic planning will take into account the organisation’s environment which, in conjunction with chosen methods for delivering the strategy, will govern the P3 environment.

This section explains the key characteristics of strategic management and operations management and how they relate to P3 management. It also explains the many environmental factors that will influence the way that a project, programme or portfolio is constituted and managed.
