Peter Simon BSc PMP FAPM HonFAPMPeter Simon

Director at Lucidus Consulting Limited

Peter Simon has over 40 years of experience as a project management consultant and practitioner across all industries and business sectors. He has built a professional reputation as a particularly knowledgeable and skilled advisor and trainer, particularly in those areas related to programme management, project planning, risk management and resource management.

In his early career he worked for a variety of organisations across the Oil and Gas, Utilities and Transportation sectors as a project management and project services practitioner and was responsible for all aspects of project planning and control and risk management for projects based in Europe, USA and the Middle East. In his later career he has achieved significant success in building the project management consultancy and training arms of the PMProfessional group of companies in addition to many years as a successful freelance project management consultant and a period as European Technical Director for ESI International. He is now a Director of Lucidus Consulting Limited.

Peter was first introduced to formal project risk management while working with major oil companies in the early 1980s. His time working as project services manager at BP convinced him of the benefits of using risk management (both qualitative and quantitative) to greatly improve the delivery performance of projects. Peter has consulted, and developed and delivered training programmes in risk management for numerous companies across many industries including Royal Dutch Shell, Talisman, BG Group, ASTAD, Associated British Ports, AXA Insurance, Hofmann la Roche, Pfizer, Quintiles, BAE Systems, Transport for London, Costain, Wood, Ordnance Survey and the UK Government’s Department for Work and Pensions.

Peter has worked closely with the UK’s Association for Project Management (APM) in the area of project risk management. He was Chair of the APM’s Risk SIG from 2020–2022, in an earlier period as Chair he was Project Manager and Managing Editor of the APM’s PRAM Guide first published in October 1997.

Peter is qualified as a Managing Successful Programmes (MSP) Advanced Practitioner, a PRINCE2 Practitioner and Management of Risk (M_o_R) Practitioner. His experience is supported by his Honorary Fellowship of the UK Association for Project Management (APM) and membership of the Project Management Institute (PMI®). He also holds the APM PMQ, APMPQ and PMP® qualifications.

Peter has written many published papers on subjects relating to project management including risk management, resource management and satisfying the client’s requirements. This published work ensures that Peter’s vast and still developing expertise in project management is passed on for the benefit of others. He is also co-author of two books; ‘Starting Out in Project Management – Study Guide for the APM Introductory Certificate in Project Management’ and ‘Practical Project Risk Management: the ATOM Methodology’; both of which are in their third editions. This second book (ATOM) was awarded the 2013 PMI David I. Cleland Project Management Literature Award for the best project management related book in 2013.

Peter is a Visiting Fellow of Cranfield University School of Management where he teaches on the Full-Time MBA and the MSc in Project and Programme Management. He was previously an Adjunct Professor at ESCP Business School in London and at Aalto University in Finland
