Chartered Project Professional of the Year Award

The winner of this category has now been announced. Congratulations to all our finalists in this category.

The Chartered Project Professional of the Year Award celebrates excellence in professional development, project delivery and contribution to society.

Our Chartered Project Professional category recognises individuals who have consistently demonstrated a dedication to improving their skills and ethical practice, resulting in successful project delivery.

To be eligible to enter in the award, you must be professionally active Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) as of entries opening (last awarded Wednesday 20 March 2023).

The winner of this award will have made a measurable contribution to the wider public/societal benefit beyond their professional role and will be a role model for others to aspire to.

We require entrants to this category to produce a submission of up to 1,000 words (in English) based on the judging criteria through delivery of a project where their involvement has been greater than six months. Entrants may also submit up to four supporting images or graphics only (no text apart from short captions). Video and audio is not accepted as part of the submission.

This category consists of two stages, the first stage being the written submission mentioned above and the second stage requires the shortlisted candidates to partake in a second stage virtual 20-minute presentation to a panel of judges, including Adam Boddison, Chief Executive of APM.

Congratulations to our Winner

Winner  Ed Mason-Smith, CBO

I am an enthusiastic project professional with a passion for improving project management across the Channel Islands and wider. At CBO, I have built an ever-growing team of knowledgeable, qualified and industry respected project professionals whilst also delivering a range of high-profile projects. As Chair of the APM Channel Islands Branch, I lead a community of project professionals who come together to share best practice and improve the understanding of the profession. One of my proudest areas of work is leading the development of the Guernsey project management apprenticeship and its potential impact on the profession locally.

Finalist  Dr David Jones, PA Consulting

As a Chartered Project Professional, APM Fellow, and published author on project management, I’m a strong advocate of P3M best-practice. I’ve showcased my breadth and depth of P3M knowledge, coaching, and thought leadership, effusing my passion for making a better, safer, and more sustainable world through project delivery. I love working on community-based initiatives that make a real positive difference to people’s lives.

I’m very grateful for my time in the profession that has seen me work on over £1b of projects and earned me consecutive APM award nominations. But, there is still more I want to achieve and share!

Finalist  Craig Thompson, BAE Systems

This year I became Project Controls Director for BAE Systems Submarines, having reached this position within only 7 years of joining the PM profession. Key achievements have been: establishing an accelerated training and development programme for our Early Careers (Apprentices and Graduates); successfully governing a ~£250m per annum complex portfolio of projects in Combat Systems; Sponsoring the Digitalisation of Project Management transformation project; and defining an innovative hybrid project management methodology.

I have also volunteered as a Non-Executive Director and elected Chairperson for the UK's largest primary school academy trust, providing governance, leadership and project management consultancy to schools.
