Conflict Management and Resolution

Join us at our first face to face event being held by APM Thames Valley Branch in Guildford

Generally we are conditioned to avoid conflict within our life, both at home and at work. Unfortunately this isn’t always possible, and how we deal with it can have effects further than the initial disagreement.

Conflict resolution is a way for two or more parties to find a peaceful solution to a disagreement among them. The disagreement may be personal, financial, political, or emotional. When a dispute arises, often the best course of action is negotiation to resolve the disagreement.

APM Thames Valley branch have bought together three specialists who be offering differing perspectives on conflict and how to achieve the best resolution. The format of the evening will be a short presentation from each speaker and then open Q&A from the attendees.

Our Speakers:

  • Marion Thomas
  • Chris Reay
  • Nick Fewings

Marion Thomas has spent the past 25 years working as a freelance project or programme manager across a broad range of industries and sectors, evidencing that our PM capabilities are incredibly transferable. Her favourite projects are those where the business knows what it is ultimately trying to achieve but doesn’t know how to get there. She puts leadership and people skills at the centre and front of project excellence and now spends most of her time training PMs to be great project leaders using the ExtraordinaryPM framework that she has created.

Marion is looking forward to exploring how we can use conflict in a creative and constructive way to bring greater innovation to our project delivery.

Chris Reay Retiring from the Military after 35 years service having risen through the ranks from Private to Major, Chris Reay is a Senior Lecturer in The Faculty for Leadership, Security and Warfare at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He is also the Deputy (Coordinating) Head of The Communication and Applied Behavioural Science Department where he lectures Officer Cadets who are aspiring to join the British Army as well as International Cadets from a variety of countries around the globe in Leadership & Behavioural topics that include Conflict Resolution. Chris comes at this subject from a perspective of utilising experiential examples to support acknowledged theory as well as using said theory to generate seminar and group work. Notably using Stabilisation Operations as the platform from which to coach his students his lessons are designed to encourage critical thinking as well as acknowledge ‘self’ and ‘others’ with an end state of producing a competent young officer with the necessary communication and behavioural attributes that will support them in their chosen career paths.

Nick Fewings is a Teamologist – someone who specialises in helping teams to achieve even greater success through the effectiveness of their teamwork.  For over 20 years, he has worked with teams around the globe and spoken at over 500 conferences about high-performance teamwork.  He is the creator of the Team DyNAmics Model, that measures 16 areas of teamwork and is currently writing a book about how to achieve high-performance teamwork.  Nick comes at conflict management from a behavioural perspective, helping individuals have paradigm shifts, to see colleagues as different and not difficult and be fascinated in how they do things, rather than frustrated by them.
