Project Portsmouth: Delivery of first class transformation and branch AGM

Abbey Suite, Holiday Inn, Cartwright Drive, Titchfield, Fareham, Hampshire, PO15 5RJ (J9 M27)

In 2008 Royal Mail started it’s 10 year Modernisation Programme and the associated journey of reducing the number of sorting offices (referred to internally as mail centres / plants) from 69 sites down to 37 sites nationally.

Project Portsmouth formed a part of this transformation, with their journey commencing in 2014 through to completion in 2016, when the operation and its’ associated colleagues from Portsmouth Mail Centre, merged as one with Southampton Mail Centre, located some 20 miles away.

Whilst any Project Manager will know that success is delivered through its’ people, in some projects the people element is often seen as the ‘softer’ side, and its importance sometimes overlooked. Against a backdrop of intense local rivalry, coupled with volatile internal politics, as a project team we knew from the outset of Project Portsmouth, winning the hearts and minds of all concerned would be the biggest challenge; and an innovative engagment strategy, aligned with a bespoke people solution, would be required to deliver an end state resolution for over 300 colleagues, whilst appreciating the importance of gaining the Trade Union’s stamp of approval.

During this presentation we would like to share our journey and take you through how as a team we won the hearts and minds of the people, the challenges we faced, how we overcame the hurdles and the lessons we learnt along the way, which ultimately resulted in the successful integration of colleagues from Portsmouth into an already established workforce of over 500 people in Southampton.
