FAQs for candidates

When do I need to submit my application if I want to use the current assessment?

The planned deadline for written applications is 24 March 2027. However, APM may close submissions earlier if demand is greater than the available capacity. You should submit as soon as you are ready rather than relying on the final date.

What happens if I have started an application but do not submit it by the deadline?

Unsubmitted applications will not transfer automatically. You will need to prepare for and book the new assessment. Existing incomplete applications are expected to be closed when the current application route is withdrawn.

At the close of the transition period we will be deleting all unused submission, if you wish to keep any of your entry, please copy and paste it out of the system before this date.

When can I book the new assessment?

Bookings are currently planned to open online on 24 May 2027 for assessments taking place from 14 June 2027.

Can I transfer my preparation to the new assessment?

Yes. The competences and Chartered standard are not changing, so your technical knowledge study, project examples and reflective evidence should remain relevant. You will need to adapt them to the new assessment format and presentation requirements.

What happens if I need to re-sit during the transition?

Your re-sit requirement will depend on the components already passed:

  • candidates who have not demonstrated all required areas will need to take the full new assessment;
  • candidates who have already passed Technical Knowledge will only need the relevant professional competence assessment; and
  • candidates whose professional practice has already been accepted will only need the new technical knowledge examination.

You should obtain confirmation from APM based on your pathway and individual result.

How long after the exam is the oral assessment and presentation?

The candidate must sit both parts of the assessment in a 2-week window.

Why must both parts of the assessment be taken in a 2-week period?

NO ANSWER PROVIDED

Is the oral assessment and presentation based on the answers given in the exam?

No, the exam focuses on Technical Knowledge only.

Should I delay applying until the new assessment launches?

Not necessarily. If you are ready and can realistically complete the current process before the transition deadlines, you can continue with it. If you are at an early stage of preparation, it may be more practical to prepare for the new model and avoid having to restructure your work close to the transition.

What happens

Candidate action

Now to early 2027

Both the current and new assessment arrangements should be considered when planning.

Confirm your pathway, assess how far your preparation has progressed and decide whether completing the current process is realistic.

As early as possible

Places under the current assessment are subject to capacity and are expected to be managed on a first-come, first-served basis.

If using the current model, complete and submit your written application and secure an interview date without waiting for the final deadline.

24 March 2027

Final deadline for written applications under the current assessment. APM may bring this date forward if capacity is reached.

Ensure your application has been submitted before the confirmed closing date. Do not assume a draft or incomplete application will transfer automatically.

11 June 2027

Planned final date for interviews under the current assessment.

Complete the interview by this date. Submitting a written application alone does not guarantee completion under the current model.
