Jon Broome presented to the East of England branch in September 2003 providing an overview of the NEC family and how they work in practice. The presentation looked at flexibility, clarity, stimulus to good project management and the principles for effective communication.

Jon stated that foresighted, co-operative management shrinks risk and mitigates problems. Both parties are motivated to work together if it is in both their professional and commercial interests to do so. Clear division of function and responsibility helps accountability and motivates people to play their part.

To conclude, Jon said that the NEC family is better in theory by design and that it has proven itself better in practice. Communication and good support systems are a key to its successful operation and deriving the benefits.
