Funding of apprenticeship drive by employers begins today

Sellafield Ltd is responsible for safely decommissioning the UK’s nuclear legacy as well as fuel recycling and the management of nuclear waste on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority on one of the largest construction sites in Europe.
This work involves more than 500 often highly complex projects. Successful delivery is a continual challenge which in turn drives the organisation’s commitment to developing best-in-class project professionals.
It invests heavily in recruitment at all levels and strongly believes in growing its own workforce, nurturing and developing new starters from the beginning of their career path to retirement.
The company was one of the first to embrace the Higher Apprenticeship in Project Management developed by the Association for Project Management (APM) and Skills CFA.
“It is absolutely vital that we invest in our next generation of project professionals,” said Loren Redmond, training manager with Sellafield Ltd Major Projects Directorate.
“The APM scheme provides us with a local stock of professionals and offers them an academic route as well as on the job learning.”
The APM Higher Apprenticeship is designed as a two-year programme leading to a nationally recognised diploma. Because of the complexity of the nuclear industry, Sellafield Ltd has taken this further, extending the apprenticeship beyond the diploma for an additional two years.
“We want to ensure that our apprentices have enough time and support to gain experience in different areas of the business and to constantly challenge and develop them,” explained Loren.
There are currently 19 project management apprentices and more will be taken on this September as part of the company's record intake of over 200 apprentices. As well as ensuring the company has the project professionals that it needs, it has other benefits, added Loren.
“The apprentices bring fresh eyes, a can-do attitude, are willing to challenge and contribute to the way projects are run. They feel it is a really good scheme – one of our apprentices scored the highest mark in the country for the APM exam and her paper is now being shared with training providers as an exemplar.
“You can’t ask for better than that!”
