Getting sustainability on the agenda of built environment projects webinar
On Wednesday 15 July, a webinar focussed on the importance of upskilling project management professionals to integrate sustainability decision-making into the early stages of the project lifecycle, translating theoretical concepts to real-life application.
The role of a Project Manager is to integrate sustainability into project delivery:
- Helping to achieve public sustainability and net zero carbon commitments through project delivery, advocating for sustainability to ensure it is on the agenda with the same importance as time, cost, and quality.
- Tracking and reporting progress against sustainability metrics from concept to close-out.
- Ensuring technical expertise to aid decision making is incorporated where required.
- Advocating for all aspects of sustainability (Nature Based Solutions, Circular Economy, Resilience (PAS2039 – new standard in development), Decarbonisation, Social Value)
Sustainability throughout the project lifecycle:
- Using APM technical terminology of lifecycle approaches to help integrate sustainability into existing practices.
- Focusing on the early stages of the life cycle to ensure designers can integrate sustainability into the initial design phase – outlining the PAS2080 Carbon Reduction Hierarchy ‘Avoid, Switch, Improve’.
- Ensuring ownership of sustainability requirements throughout delivery at each phase.
Putting the theory into practice:
- Design and application of a carbon management methodology in a major infrastructure asset, including PAS2080 Principles and Construction Leadership Council’s 5 Client Carbon Commitments - Heathrow Airport Ltd
- Application of Carbon Manager Framework at the Environment Agency to help upskill project teams in sustainability practices
- Case study from built environment
